Second-Generation Honda BR-V Set To Solidify Presence In Competitive Seven-Seater SUV Market

First introduced to the local market in 2016, the first-generation Honda BR-V positioned itself as a true value offering thanks to offering customers utility, space and comfort - all at a competitive price compared to its key competitors. The second-generation model, now available in South Africa, offers improved exterior and interior looks, improved standard specification and technology too.

Exterior Design

The all-new Honda BR-V sports a dynamic body shape with strong contour lines which run from the front to the rear of the BR-V, enhancing the length of the vehicle. The front of the BR-V has been redesigned, with an aggressive and sporty grille taking center stage. Flanking the grille is a set of also redesigned LED headlights with daytime-running lights.

The rear end of the HB-V has also been redesigned and boasts a set of LED taillamps. A rugged look is achieved thanks to the roof rails and alloy wheels. 16-inch alloy wheels are found on the Trend and Comfort models whereas 17-inch alloy wheels are found on the range-topping Elegance model.

The exterior color options include Opal White (Pearl), Modern Steel (Metallic), Lunar Silver (Metallic), and Crystal Black (Pearl). Most noteworthy, the BR-V has grown 35mm in length and 45mm in width, thus resulting in overall improved space in the cabin.

Interior Design

The interior of the Honda BR-V is free of clutter and keeps a minimalistic approach. Greeting the driver is a multi-functional steering wheel, of which behind it is a set of analogue instrument clusters. A 4.2-inch TFT display is standard fitment on the Elegance model and is able to provide various forms of information such as Honda SENSING functions.

The infotainment system is comprised of a 7.0-inch touchscreen which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. This is standard fitment across all models in the range. Comfort and Elegance models benefit from an integrated reverse parking camera. Elegance models receive power outlets in all three rows of seats in order to allow for the charging of smart devices.

Engine and Power

Powering the second-generation BR-V is Honda's latest 1.5-litre DOHC i-VTEC engine which is capable of 89kW and 145Nm of torque. The Trend model features a six-speed manual transmission only however the Comfort model may be purchased with either a six-speed manual or a CVT which Honda say has been specifically tuned for the BR-V. The range-topping Elegance model is only available with a CVT.

The BR-V is packed with safety features as standard, and these include Vehicle Stability Assist, Hill Start Assist, Emergency Stop Signal, Anti-Lock Braking System and ISOFIX child seat anchors. Dual front and side airbags are also standard fitment across the entire range. Comfort and Elegance models benefit from curtain airbags.

Exclusive to the Elegance model is the premium suite of active safety features referred to as Honda SENSING. This includes features such as Collision Mitigation Braking System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist System, Road Departure Mitigation, Auto High-Beam, Lane Watch Camera and Forward Collision Warning.

The all-new Honda BR-V is priced as follows:

1.5 Trend MT: R379, 900

1.5L Comfort MT: R409, 900

1.5L Comfort CVT: R434, 900
