Launch Drive: Mahindra XUV700

After a sneak preview event and short drive on a closed circuit a few months ago in Pretoria, the local arm of Mahindra has finally introduced the exciting new XUV700 to the market and it marks the dawn of a new era for the manufacturer.

Exterior Design

The all-new Mahindra XUV700 features an unmissable presence which is achieved by the striking front grille which features the new Twin Peaks logo. Flanking the grille is a set of LED Clear-view headlamps with Automatic Boosting, along with LED daytime-running lights and LED sequential indicators.

The rear features arrow-tip taillamps with LED technology and an additional LED high-level brake lamp. A first in the segment is the inclusion of flush Smart door handles. Five exterior paint colors are on offer, and these include Everest White, Midnight Black, Dazzling Silver, Red Rage and Electric Blue. Overall, we were left thoroughly impressed with the exterior packaging of the XUV700.

Safety in the Mahindra XUV700 is achieved by the standard fitment of the newest generation of stability control and personalized safety alerts. AX7 derivatives benefit from 7 airbags, comprehensive Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) which include Smart Pilot Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition and automatic headlamps with high beam assist.

Also fitted on AX7 models is a tyre pressure monitoring system, an additional reverse camera, and an intelligent driver drowsiness detection system. Top of the range AX7 L models will further benefit from a Stop and Go driving function which works in conjunction with the adaptive cruise control system.

Technology in the Mahindra XUV700 is handled by the new Mahindra Super screen which comprises of two high-definition digital screens for the digital cluster and infotainment system, measuring 26cm each. Standard across the entire model range is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Also featured across the entire range is Mahindra’s panoramic Skyroof.

A SONY branded audio system is fitted to the XUV700, with the AX7 L benefiting from the upgraded 12-speaker SONY audio system with full immersive 3D sound. Also included in the AX7 L is wireless charging, fully automatic electronic door handles, a Blind View Monitor system which includes four digital cameras mounted around the vehicle for a 360-degree bird’s eye view of the vehicle for ease of manoeuvring.

Engine and Power

One engine is on offer across the entire model range; a 2.0 mStallion turbocharged petrol engine which can deliver 149kW and a class leading torque figure of 380Nm, mated to a buttery-smooth 6-speed automatic transmission. We quite enjoyed the engine and transmission pairing a lot. Acceleration and overtaking was effortless and more importantly, the overall comfort was superb too. We managed to drive on a small stretch of gravel road and were left impressed with how well-appointed the suspension was.

Three model derivatives are on offer, and they are priced as follows:

  • Mahindra XUV700 AX5 – R474 999
